Commute to work on METRO.
METRO provides bus transportation throughout Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth and the Maine Mall area of South Portland.
Regional Monthly Passes, sold for $45, can be used on METRO and South Portland Bus Service routes.
TenRide tickets are also available for purchase.

Paying transit costs for employees is a great tax free benefit for them and gives employers a break too.
As an employer-paid benefit, employees do not pay taxes on the value of this benefit; employers recieved a tax deduction for the expense.
(Section 132).

Businesses interested in providing TenRide tickets or Regional Passes for employees promote "Green Transportation" and offer a valuable benefit for employees. Subsidizing bus transportation can save employees and employers money (avoiding the purchase of a second car, saving money on monthly/weekly parking expenses, etc.)

We Go METRO!

coreytwebCorey T. -- "As a car-free Portlander, I rely on Metro for transportation around town when I'm not walking or biking. I ride it every day and enjoy the financial savings and convenience of not having to own a car. On days when coworkers have to deal with traffic jams or winter weather, I can proudly say that I not only made it to work on time, but also finished reading a few chapters of whatever book I'm reading while on the bus. I recommend trying a trip on the Metro to everyone. Even if the bus isn't your only method of transportation, it can be a healthy part of a balanced transportation diet."
Corey takes METRO to his job at UNUM.

 Michelle S -- "

METRO offers me the opportunity to be flexible. I can rely on METRO to get me to work or around town.
I keep the TenRide pass in my wallet so I can take the bus when I need it."
Michelle likes the convenience of taking METRO.

Anne F. -- "I've been riding METRO off and on for over 20 years. I've been riding it daily thru the work week for the last five years. My husband and I have managed to become a one-car family because of METRO. It saves us upkeep and car insurance on a second car, gasoline; and I save myself the stress of driving to and from work in traffic and weather conditions. In fact, it makes me a more productive employee. When the office closes because of weather conditions, I can stay at work, because the buses very rarely stop running. I've also met some interesting people that I would never have met otherwise."

Anne commutes daily on METRO to her job at One Monument Square in Portland.

seanhwebSean H. -- "If it wasn't for the bus, my family would need a second car, as I work downtown but my wife works in South Portland. Instead, I get exercise to and from the stops, catch up on news or emails during the ride, and enjoy the walk down to the waterfront to end my morning commute. Cheaper, healthier and more fun than dealing with endless red lights, traffic and construction!"

Sean commutes to downtown Portland and walks to his job on Fore Street.

Roberta R. -- "My husband and I usually carpool to work but quite often I take the #3 when our schedules don't coordinate. I love the ease and simplicity of taking the bus. I've met some wonderful people; it's a great way to start and end the day with a leisurely ride on the bus. I enjoy having someone else deal with the congested traffic and bad weather conditions. My employer offer their employees METRO passes in leiu of parking spaces."

Jennifer G. -- "I love taking the METRO for the convenience (the number 4 bus picks me up at the end of my street and drops me right off at work), the environmental benefits and the economic wear, tear and gas for my truck. I'm able to catch up on reading or emails during the commute and use my time effectively. My family meets me at the bus stop after work, so we all get alittle outdoor exercise in!"

Jennifer takes the bus to her job at IDEXX in Westbrook.

Pat L. - "I live in Gray, park my car at a friend's house along METRO Route #6 and take the bus to my job in Portland twice a week. It's possible to save considerable money (at least $10 a day) by riding the bus instead of driving my car, and I meet interesting people. I enjoy taking METRo to work and encourage others to try it. It's easy."
Pat L works part-time and saves money by taking the bus to work.

Nancy W. - "I ride the bus to work most days. It's quick and easy for me, and saves on parking, gas and maintenance expenses. I get to reduce my carbon footprint. Plus, I really like being a part of the flow of other people riding the bus as part of their day."
Nancy commutes on METRO Route #4 to her job at Maine College of Art.

“We offer our employees Metro passes in lieu of a parking space. The Metro passes benefit our employees and PowerPay, by saving employees the costs associated with driving their vehicle to and from work while helping PowerPay forward its Green Mission.  In addition, the Metro’s schedule and routes make it a convenient alternative to driving and allows employees to relax during their commute.”
Linda Cannon, Human Resource Manager
PowerPay, Portland, Maine

“Through Maine Medical Center's ‘Get on Board’ alternative commuting program, the hospital encourages employees to take advantage of the area's bus services, including METRO, because they offer reliable and convenient transportation and are a green alternative. The hospital is pleased to subsidize a portion of the cost to make METRO an even better value for staff.”
Mike Ryan, Vice President of Operations - Maine Medical Center
